Is there a way to download from the psn store without updating to the latest firmware?

I used to use this method --> worked on firmware 3.55 which my vita is still running. But no longer does it connect.

It's been tried on osTen and Linux

If this isn't working anymore I think the only thing you can do is to update to 3.60 and use the HENkaku spoofer (which would mean you have to update, but not to the leatest version).
If you want to stay on 3.55, you're out-of-luck for the moment (and as I assume for ever)

If you have a console like ps3 you could download the game on it then copy i guess.

No, but Coldbird is working on it. Additional to this you get access to all of this great new Vita native homebrew programs https://gbatemp.net/threads/henkaku-homebrew-the-listing-of-all-vpks.436535/ including this emulators https://gbatemp.net/threads/henkaku-homebrew-the-listing-of-all-vpks.436535/#post-6576293 (there is also a PS1 emulator now, have to update the post) and even access to Vita games warez.
