Multiple PS3 owners have run into trouble upgrading their console's hard disk drive since the release of firmware update v3.56 last week.

According to users on multiple forums (via Examiner), the 3.56 firmware prevents more recently released PS3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive.

This bug has reared its head in previous PS3 updates too.

The following models are said to have been affected.

Original PS3s:
CECHH
CECHJ
CECHK
CECHL
CECHM
CECHP
CECHQ

Slim PS3s:
CECH-20..A
CECH-20..B
CECH-21..A
CECH-21..B
CECH-250.A
CECH-250.B
CECH-250.A
CECH-250.B
CECH-251.A
CECH-251.B

Officially described as a "security patch" by Sony, firmware update v3.56 is thought to have been designed to shut out hackers after PS3 protection software was completely circumvented last month.

The new firmware was broken within hours, but Call of Duty: Black Ops hackers didn't get off lightly.

Its a bug I think they're planning on fixing. Not a huge deal unless you want to upgrade your HDD now. Unless it blocks all non-OEM HDDs including ones already in the console.

Sony Timer.

Sony has decided that these particular models have worked long enough and now its time for their owners to "upgrade" to a newer model.

Geohot's fault, obviously.yeah, that and geohot. That's the reason for Sony's hasty update. The man that ruined PSN. :'(

It's Sony's decision, and Sony's fault.
If they preformed the proper checks and acted professional, this wouldn't have happened.
