Downgrading is reinstalling all the PS3 factory clean, you lose everything if you don't do a backup of your data first.
Then, I don't know if the backup'd data will work on the new system, as I don't know if the crypt key is hardware or regenerated after each factory installation.
I didn't see any report yet about data restoration after a downgrade.

There's only the video, and I read that the downgrade program has been leacked on psx-scene.

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
