Does the light goes yellow between the green and red flashes?

If so your PS3 is dead and it's not because of the latest update, just a coincidence.

Are you saying it died immediately after applying the update, or did you get to play a game first? And look more carefully, the light should flash yellow for a split second...

Did you have changed your hard drive?

I've heard 3.56 have a bug on some PS3, it only accept the original hard drive (a fix should be coming soon).

Call Sony for support. Since you've not done anything wrong, they might still fix it for free (although I can't remember how long the original warranty lasted).
One year.

Which means our OP will have to pay those *expletive* $180 USD now to get it repaired...

Did you try booting into recovery mode?

Thats the same thing that happened to my 40GB PS3. I updated to 2.10, it turned off after installation, and BOOM it was broken.

I called it in and crap and they told me that I overheated it, and that since I was 2 days out of warranty there was nothing they could do.

I think its 60gb
More then likely you have the YLOD because the older PS3 models tend to
get that (20, 40, 60, and First 80). You have 2 choices,
1. Call Sony and have them give you a new one, doing this will erase all of your save data
2. Try to fix it on your own and retain your data

It's still a problem with the console overheating, so you would still have to do those
2 choices.
