We use the PS3 as a blu-ray player in our home cinema rig.
If it makes noise, I dunno, the hi-fi usually warns the neighbors of what movie we're watching anyway!
It's sad it doesn't have ANY games at all I Like. But for movies? It's great!

Fixed. The PS3 has many great games, it's a shame you can't acknowledge them.

Ze, you've got to stop bringing that up in every PS3-related topic.

well for value... 'course you should just get the ps3 instead of some BD player. That's what I did =D, and got a free Casino Royale Blu-ray in the mail shortly after registering with PSN.

I have to agree with Ze. I have 15 PS3 games, 3 of them are multi-platform, I have 26 XB360 games, 13 of them are multi-platform.
And I only have 1 BD movie =P So my PS3 is pure gaming machine, and I'm happy with it.

But it's true? if it had no games it wouldn't have lasted 1 year so obviously people are buying them for a reason.. And that is because of GAMES. Well mostly games I'd say 85% of people buy the PS3 for games and the 15% buy it for Blu-Ray Movies

So I'm a movie fanatic, and I don't own anything Blu-Ray yet, and with Pixar releasing their shit on BR only, I need to get a player. A standard Blu-Ray player will cost me about $399 retail, maybe a little cheaper on eBay or something. A basic PS3 system will cost virtually the same, but double as a game system for the few good games out right now (never been a Playstation fan).

However, I've heard reports that the DVD movie functionality of the PS2 destroyed the system over time. Is that true, and have there been any movie issues with the PS3 (just Blu-Ray, I could care less about DVD compatibility)??

I would assume that the new 1.1 or whatever spec for Blu-Ray will be supported by the PS3, seeing as it's a Sony product ...

What's the word?

The PS3 has dual lens in it, one for DVDs and one for Blu-Ray. You'll be fine. It's a terrific Blu-Ray movie player, and currently one of the best. Next year Sony is updating all the PS3s with the latest firmware to update the Blu-Ray profile to 1.1 for more support.
