So I'm a movie fanatic, and I don't own anything Blu-Ray yet, and with Pixar releasing their shit on BR only, I need to get a player. A standard Blu-Ray player will cost me about $399 retail, maybe a little cheaper on eBay or something. A basic PS3 system will cost virtually the same, but double as a game system for the few good games out right now (never been a Playstation fan).

However, I've heard reports that the DVD movie functionality of the PS2 destroyed the system over time. Is that true, and have there been any movie issues with the PS3 (just Blu-Ray, I could care less about DVD compatibility)??

I would assume that the new 1.1 or whatever spec for Blu-Ray will be supported by the PS3, seeing as it's a Sony product ...

    What's the word?

I've heard the ps3's blue-ray playback is iffy and very loud. People have said it sounds like a helicopter is playing your movie.

firmware updates will allow the ps3 to be updated to the latest blu-ray spec. many bought the ps3 as exactly that: a blue ray player. It's cost effective and plays the movies well. inevitably you will wear the laser out sooner the more it's used, and if you use it as a games machine and movie player, it will obviously put more workload on the machine.

You're being mistaken, that's the sound of an Xbox 360 playing a DVD

I don't have any noise issues with my 360 or it's HD-DVD add-on. So I guess the PS3 is what I should be looking at for Blu-Ray ... sweet ... now let's find a great deal on one with a good game.

The PS3 seemed quiet to me when playing a blu ray film. I never noticed much difference on my samsung 26" HDTV. Its only 720 though. I've been told that you need a 1080 HDTV to notice the difference. If your only going to use the PS3 from blu ray, you maybe better also looking at HD-DVD players. Some better offers on them at the moment. Even the stand alone ones.

It is apparently a good player, with the added advantage that it is updatable.
Some of the earlier/cheaper players aren't updatable and as such BD+ doesn't work on them, along with the upcoming BD spec.
I've heard that BD+ has issues and that's awhile to long on the PS3, not sure if its been fixed yet.

    haven't tried it yet though

My friend uses it as a Blu Ray player only.. doesn't even play games on it. I didn't hear any loud noises from it either so you should be fine [IMG]

Between 480i and 720p theres a big difference, how far away from the TV were you? If your too far on a small TV it won't be as noticeable.

The PS3 is very quiet. I have never had any problems playing a game or movie at night, so even when there isn't alot of sound coming from the tv it's still like a sleeping baby.

Even though it's probably the cheapest player, it is also the best. Some articles put the PS3 alongside some standalone BD players and the PS3 won with head and shoulders above them. So yeah, PS3 wins as an entertainment system. Plus, watching DVDs upscaled on an LCD TV is sex. [IMG]

One person that said it was loud was comparing it to other standalone blu-ray/hd-dvd players.
Another person said it was only loud at the end of the movies when the machine was very heated so the fan was on full speed and it impaired his enjoyment of the movie.

It seems to be some sort of defect and it differs with models.

PAL is 576i, a lot of people don't see a huge difference (from PAL to HD) because of a small increase in resolution.

For HDMI 1.3 BD player, PS3 has the best functionality and price.
Mine is very quiet, even after watching BD for almost 2 hours, it's still cool (disable wireless internet if you don't want machine heating up. Wireless network devices get REALLY hot)

The only downside of PS3 is it's bulkier than BD players.

If you haven't had noise issues with 360, you will eventually once you pick up PS3 [IMG]
As soon as I turn on my 360, it's louder than my PS3 which has been doing Folding@Home for 64 hours straight.

I've heard of louder Ps3 fans that Sony installed on some models in Asia region not sure if they did so too in US models too.

The biggest difference between Xbox 360 and PS3 is simple in concept, yet very significant.

Xbox 360 will allow games and the main menu to display fine using HDMI without HDCP support. Only movies are affected.

While PS3, it requires HDCP to display any image whatsoever on HDMI. Including just the XMB! [IMG]

I love my ps3 as a blue ray player
its got 5.1 dolby and thx out HDMI and Optical
its very quiet, and it also comes in handy as a great media server to push your stuff off of your "office PC" (mp3s, wmas, mpegs, jpegs, whatever) to your ps3 so you can watch it off of your TV (using winamp remote, azureus, or windows media player 11)

We use the PS3 as a blu-ray player in our home cinema rig.
If it makes noise, I dunno, the hi-fi usually warns the neighbors of what movie we're watching anyway!
It's sad it doesn't have ANY games at all. But for movies? It's great!

Fixed. The PS3 has many great games, it's a shame you can't acknowledge them.
