I'm trying to replace the laser in my PS2 Fat SCPH-30001v4. I bought a NOS KHS400C laser (came with the box and everything) but it didn't seem to work even after I reprogrammed the EPROM to the correct laser (mine should have a 400B). I also tried adjust the skew screw but I couldn't get it to read. I didn't want to play with any of the other adjusts as I wanted to be able to put my original laser back in in case everything went to hell. Thankfully I was able to do just that.
Now I want to buy a new laser and try again but I have two questions:
1. Should I try another 400C or stick with a 400B?
2. Does it matter where I buy the laser from? Are there some knockoffs that are better than others?
