PS1/2 ps1 swap disc trick

i want to buy some ps1 ntsc games will the swap disc trick work on a pal ps1 to be able to play them?

Probably, yeah. But the swap trick is difficult to do on a newer model PlayStation because you have to swap twice.. success rate can be low.
Also, I assume in this day and age you have a TV that can display NTSC content?

Just buy them for collection. You're better playing a PS1 game on a smartphone using an external controller, PSP, PSVita, and/or emulate it on a PC. So many choices that you're better off.

Unless of course you really want that nostalgia feeling, then go ahead with it.

If you want super easy swap, the ps2 slim is really really easy to do them swap trick. So do the mod to the door switch and there are many tutorials. Then you start the ps2 with an original game in the console and listen for head movement and as soon as the head makes a large move put your backup in and it should boot. The newer psz is tricky but the PS2 slim is really easy once you get the hang of it.

I had a PS1 that I was able to do the swap trick with, but the trick to getting it to work successfully is that you need a game that has a lot of content on the disc so that the TOC that it reads from the burned disc won't go past the length of the original disc's length. Games that are good for doing this are games that are usually sold in multiple discs, so FFVII, VIII, or even IX, sadly enough. There's probably a few other good ones, but I haven't had any luck in that regard.

But yeah, at this point, you're probably best off just emulating or something, unless you want the nostalgia factor.

Yeah the original has to be a game that will work as a swap game for the backup. Is this because of TOC. Anyway with the ps2 slim I need to correct that you swap when you hear the 2nd major head movement. So the PS2 slim drive seems much better than any of the previous PS or PS2 models and the swap is a single swap and works every time easily with nothing tricky, whereas the older ps1's seem undependable and the psx model seems really difficult to do the swap trick.

I found that the most reliable way besides a PS1 modchip to play ps1 backups is using a ps3 Super Slim to do a disc swap on the XMB. If you tape the pad that stops the disc so the disc spins freely, you can use a thin piece of cardboard to hold the sensor down for the sliding door then swap the disc once it shows up on the XMB. If you wait over 5 minutes before swapping, the disc will stop spinning so you can safely swap it without resorting to hotswapping. It then is as easy as launching the game. any disc works as the swap disc as the TOC is read upon launch.

For a ps2/slim you can make it even easier by using PSXLAUNCHER.ELF to swap games. It stops the disc drive for you so you can switch games. Just make sure your retail ps1 game has a high TOC count. I use Tomb Raider 1 as my swap disc.

also, emulators are region free if ya cant get er done

If you're lucky enough to own a PS1 Action Replay you can use that to swap out discs easily.

Swap trick is one of the better way to fuck up your PS1 drive, you're better off getting your console modded with a modchip.

I wonder if doing the swap trick really does any damage. If using psxlaumcher the drive motor has stopped so no damage there. However I'm really not sure swapping with the disk spinning really damages the motor. I doubt it. If it does I see PS2 slims dirt cheap so just have a couple of them.

I've used the swap trick for 6 years and it's really easy honestly. The only thing that got a bit damaged was the little thing that you put the disk on (that spins) and only a tiny plastic piece that is not important broke .. that's after 5 years and it didn't change much tbh. You have to swap the disk twice and you can even play protected games like dino crisis by swaping them a 3rd time (right before the copy protection screen appears). Good luck

If done correctly 100% of the time, yes. However, if done wrong, the laser lens can get scratched by a disc hitting it while doing the swap while the disc is spinning.
