80 minute CDs (unlike higher capacities) are indeed conforming to the 74 minute CD standard (which allows for manufacturing tolerances and 80's the result of the maximum allowed density) - and since you're not going to fill them further than 74 there won't be any software compatibility problems

Any standard CD in principle works - the better question is how optically readable is it (which is determined by multiple factors such as the materials it's made out of, how good your recorder is, how good your recorder is with those discs, ... and can't really be determined just by stating names of brands/models)

In theory - in practice they don't (CD-ROM which is the disc type a PS1 is designed for is inherently more reflective than CD-R which is better than CD-RW, plus the mentioned brand/model and individual disc/drive variations), which is why you may need to try a different brand of disc (which is rarely the name written on the label - imgburn should be able to tell you but there are dedicated tools for reading the ATIP data if you need them) and/or adjust your console's optical drive (as a last resort)

That doesn't mean much - is the disc image valid in the first place? did the disc get written correctly? is your current backup loading system working/performed correctly? etc...
