Does the old 3ds xl protection screen work for the N3DS?

It should be the same for the New 3DS XL since the screen size remains the same however protective screens filters for the New 3DS (non XL) does not fit as the screen for the standard is bigger on the New 3DS.

i have the 3DS XL hori screen protector on my N3DS fits fine

I bought a 3DS at launch and never put a screen protectors on it, and the screens look as good as new. The screens that Nintendo uses are good at resisting wear.

Considering the fact that all of khadafi's posts are advertisements for Play Asia, I wouldn't take their word as fact. However, I used Hori for my 3DS and it worked well.

I'm sure the dimensions of the New 3DS are out there. Just compare it to the original, and if they're the same don't bother getting New ones.
