Hardware Problems with power supply

Has anyone had to rma a power supply several times? I've got a evga 850 gq and have had to rma twice. No overclocking or even a major gaming setup. Just curious if anyone has had this happen to them. My computer is drawing well below the 850 watts it can supply but the first one I bought lasted 2 years before it went kaput. So I RMA about 3 months ago. Got the rma in and it lasted about a month and a half. Sent it back for another rma and just got the new rma back yesterday. Just seems that it shouldn't be this bad. Checked out my computer hardware as a just in case but no problems with a cheaper psu.

My 600B has been going strong for 3 years now. Maybe you just had horrid luck. It happens sometimes, I know its irritating but as long as EVGA accepts fault, I wouldn't think too much about it. Unless it happens soon, which could mean they have a faulty design or there is something suspicious with your house's electrical architecture (?)

Probably just bad luck. Friend had a evga g2 650w die after a couple of days. Replacement has been fine for over a year.

I've been through it with Corsair, nothing but bad luck for me there.

Corsair tx650 dead after 1 year.
Replacement tx650, dead after 1 year.
Replacement tx650, bad fan.
Replaced by Corsair with an hx750. Fine for two years, then bad fan and whining.
Replacd again by Corsair for an Hx750i, fine for a while, then the ntc thermistor cracked. No warranty by this point, changed the thermistor myself and still going strong in brothers pc.

Switched to Seasonic now, must have been cursed with Corsair for some reason.

I would have said it was the electrical as well but I had the whole house rewired 3 years ago. Wasnt cheap to do it either. Maybe it was just bad luck so far. I mean it's running pretty good so far.

A power supply is one of the most important components on your computer (if not the most important). Never buy cheap ones because when they go bad they can take other important components like the motherboard or hard drives. I have one Thermaltake (TR2-500) and it is one bad, however it ran on two previous builds and now it is running on a new one (must be luck and I will replace it soon); also I have one Cooler master (V850) that is 80 plus gold and it runs my gaming rig without issues. You can check this list to have an idea of which power supplies are ok and some are just fire crackers. Do not go for the most expensive ones, instead look for one that has at least a bronze certification and you should be good. Those EVGA are not good ones..... I was going to buy one but they are not reliable as other brands like Cooler Master, Corsair or Seasonic (Seasonic are one of the best that you can buy, Cooler Master are based on Seasonic designs). If possible I suggest that you get a new power supply since you already experienced the reliability of EVGA ones.... before your rig suffer a catastrophic failure.

I've still got about 3 years left on my warranty for the evga though. Ive always used evga for my power supplies and never really had a problem until this one. Now I am thinking about building a new system anyway, so i will choose a different psu for that build.

Half of Corsair’s PSUs are actually made by Seasonic anyway. My Corsair HX750i is still going strong over 4 years since I got it in my main gaming rig. The Tagas in my brother’s rig has lasted around 9 years and counting.

At this point I would start looking into the hardware, 3 of them failing is pretty odd. Something might be drawing too much power or causing a surge.
Never had a psu fail on me, corsair one I used for 5 years, even a junky topower one going for 10 years.

I thought that too. All I have in it is a gigabyte mobo, amd ryzen 1500, a xfx ati 560, 1 module of 8gb ddr 4 ram and a hdd. Nothing that should be killing this specific psu. I had a corsair 550 watt in it to test and no problems with it at all.

It is a modular style. Every other style I have used hasnt been modular. I dont know if that's the problem but it could just be a bad luck at the rmas.

According to this wattage calculator your system consumes around 263 watts, so your current power supply is enough to handle those components and also has room for future expansion (even if it is a terrible power supply). Not sure if you have some kind of power protection like an UPS or surge protectors, those help a lot. I think that particular model either faulty by design or you are getting an used or returned item that nobody even tested before. My suggestion here is getting in contact EVGA and explain the situation, it is not acceptable that you are getting a replacement that fails twice (however their reliability is well known so I will stay away from that brand), or if possible get a well known brand like Corsair, Cooler Master or Seasonic.

I have one that I got from Newegg. Had over 1000 reviews with only 2 bad reviews.

I would probably still guess it's electrical in nature, just because you had an "expensive" rewire doesn't necessarily mean it was a "quality" rewire. If it happens again, try buying a UPS and see if that helps the issue. If so, you know whoever rewired your house possibly did a shoddy job, and you'll probably want to have someone look into that. I'd also try asking the RMA department for an explanation on what exactly is killing these PSUs, if possible, that may help narrow down the problem.

Barring that, buy another PSU from another brand and see if that fixes it. I personally haven't had a problem with EVGA myself, I've got a 600w PSU from then that's lasted 6-7ish years so far now in my old gaming PC, and I haven't seen any excessive complaints that would suggest their PSUs are shit, but it's possible you're simply getting shit luck or shoddy PSUs

Where I live at, when you have electrical work done they go through a county electrician to verify that it meets or exceeds the minimum for the state. The company I went through is one of the best in my city and surrounding areas. They even came back once a month and did check ups for the first year after they finished. Barring that and even using a older psu and not having issues. Heck my brother even brought his psu over and we did a stress test on it. No issues under heavy load with his supply. So I just think it's really just bad rmas. They even say that they will be refurbished units that get rma.

I contacted EVGA and it seems that there was a problem with the model I had. They sent out a "newer" model to me.

I have really good luck with Antec TruePower series supplies. The one i had failed after 6 years of being on 24/7 lol. Id say thats pretty good considering consumer power supplies are not designed for 24/7 operation.
I purchaced another Antec true power and its been going for alittle more then 3yrs continual 24/7 operation

I don't know what would have gone here and if they reckon it was some kind of either design fault or manufacturing fault then I am not going to doubt it at this stage, especially if they told you that (most companies don't volunteer such information without a boot on their neck). What I am more here to note is often times RMA products are either returns or something one of their technicians fixed (usual flow being get however many in and sit down your half bright technician, or maybe an engineer, to go through and check the usual faults and return them to working order if possible) rather than being a spanking new item they fetched off the shelf and thus subject to a greater failure rate, even if they might try to tell me that each restored item has a thorough burn in test or something performed on it.
