So I was having problems getting backups to read after installing the XenoGC, but I verified that the modchip was working by holding start on an official disc and getting the PAL scrambled version string. So I figured it was the media, and I eventually ended up with some really cheap Chinese mini DVD-Rs that I was able to burn a working Swiss disc with (AML media type I believe, brand is Banana). However, I still cannot get it to load full backups. I've trimmed the pot all the way to 0 (so the laser should just be getting the base 150 ohms. My GC is a DOL-001). The closest I can get is to load up Swiss, switch discs, and hold R while it reads the backup disc. It can see what game it is and read the contents of the disc, but it still can't load the game (holding R or not).

I did burn these at 4x, so I'll give it a shot at 2x. Might be able to turn the pot back up if that works, since Swiss was able to load with the pot at 50 (but not at 100).

What about commercial disks, do they still load? When I installed the XenoGC, I didn't do any of that pot tweaking. My backups worked right off. I used ImgBurn to make my backups, and for media I used Phillips "Duplicator-Grade" mini-dvd'r. Nothing fancy. They used to sell them in a mini-cakebox of 50 on Amazon, but I don't see them there anymore. My point is, it doesn't take the most expensive media to get this to work. I had success with 'bulk' discs. But I did have a situation once where a few burns turned out to be coasters ... wouldn't boot in the GC even though I did everything the same as ever. I tried burning one using my laptop's disc drive instead of the desktop I'd always used before, and it worked! So a worn out burner is also a no-no. Try a different drive, try ImgBurn, and try putting that laser pot somewhat back to where it started.

Good luck. Sorry about the "Phillips Duplicator-Grade" discs being gone, cuz they flat-out work and they were cheap too.

It loads commercial disks fine, but nothing I burned would work until I got these ultra cheap (like $18 for 50) chinese ones, but even now, only the Swiss disc I burned works. But, I burned everything at 4x, and some folks can only get them working at 2x, so I'm trying that.

Try it, but don't use up a bunch of blanks. It may make the difference, but I doubt it.

Yeah, burning at 2x didn't help. Ritek G04's are unobtanium now, I haven't been able to find any anywhere.

Yeah, that's not happening. This was only an option because I already have a GC.

I can use Swiss with the SD Gecko for most things, some games just don't work very well or at all that way

He's got a point. I love having a beautiful, chipped, working Gamecube. But with Nintendont on my Wii, I never use the Gamecube for actual Gamecube games anymore. The modded Wii, plus WD MyPassport USB hdd, plus Monoprice component cables .... fills all your Gamecube and Wii needs. You don't even need GC memory cards anymore, since Nintendont emulates them.

The only thing I use my Gamecube for now is Gameboy Player.

I just found a tossed Wii last week and the reason it was tossed because it can't read any discs have since install HBC and Nintendont on a 2GB SD card with one game

FWIW you can get a replacement OEM disc drive for the Wii and it's an easy install, about $25. I had one with a broken drive in a box for over 10 years. Finally broke down last year and bought a new drive for it, installed it, then modded it anyway. So if my current modded Wii ever breaks, I've got a backup. (Yo dawg, I heard you like playing Wii backups. So we got ya a backup Wii to backup playing your backups.)

I'm not going to bother replacing the drive as a working Wii is less then $25

Yeah I never said it would be cost effective lol. The Wii I brought back to life was one we had since new, so I knew its history. It saw very little use before the drive broke, but it was a gift from relatives in Japan so I couldn't send it to Nintendo for warranty.
