Once upon a time it was used to show that someone was busy, preoccupied, emotionally distant (depending on the characters involved); basically that something was subtle but significant enough to disrupt the routine and/or normal life.
Nowadays it is done because everyone else is doing it. Movies aren't imitating people, movies are imitating other movies. It's just tropes on tropes on tropes.
