A "hot water bottle" is a heater that uses hot water as the thermal mass. You fill it with hot water and then it heats you for a while. They are still in use because they are practical and don't require wires or batteries. It is not a beverage container, you don't drink the water from it. It's also not a thermos bottle, it's not insulated, because the whole point is to dissipate the heat.

If you think that is bad then you should try hot fizzy water -- was once at a dump unloading the van on a baking hot day. Gasping as I was getting back in the van the only drink we had in it was a bottle of fizzy water that was about the temperature many have their tea at... bad times.

Pah my friends and I enjoyed wheelchair jousting, tricks and races back when we were greasy teenagers. Granted that is so long ago they did look like
