Hi there, I tried to fix the notorious state of black 1 and 2.
Black 1 worked right away after a swap of the save chip.

Black 2 however just refuses to start.
Until now I tried:
  1. 3 other save chips
  2. Manual restore of a save in checkpoint (on each chip after the first try)
  3. Checking the connection from the save chip to the ROM chip and cartridge pins
  4. Checking the capacitors (at least for no continuity)
  5. Checking resistors
  6. Giving the ROM chip a reflow
Does somebody know if there are other components I should check or if one of the capacitors could actually be a problem if it doesn't work?
With how expensive those games become I would certainly like to revive them.

Maybe it is still not solved but have you tryed to delete the save file of the donor in FBI while it is still on the donor board then desoldered and swapped it to the black 2? You sure have no broken trace? My heartgold had 3 broken traces at component U3 from the pin to the PCB. Since heartgold and black 2 share the same arrangement maybe something to look after.

Hi there,
There was no donor board, I just got the save chips.
I tested the entire board and there was no apparent difference between the working black 1 and the bad black 2 module.

In the end I ordered a cheap Japanese white edition and just swapped the chip with the game ROM and it works completely fine since.
No idea what was causing the issue.

Funnily enough I had a kind of similar problem with a super smash bros 64 module that wouldn't work with a battery installed everything seemed to be normal, after a lot of troubleshooting I was kinda mad and gave the whole board the hot air treatment reflowing everything and I actually fixed it.
Maybe I will try it at one point again with a hotplate.
