Pointed in the right directions

I soft modded my v1 switch in 2018/19 but havent used it much since got busy with life. I want to dust it off and use but a little behind the times. Its on older firmware 5.1.0 I want to update it but I dont want to mess anything up.

Could any help point in me in the right direction, steps, etc

It may be too long of a gap for someone to give you a detailed set of instructions. May be re-familiarize yourself with the process via a guide like this one: https://switch.hacks.guide/user_guide/getting_started.html, then ask more specific questions. In general, since it is a v1 Switch, you'll need to update Hekate, Atmosphere, Syspatch, Sigpatch, latest firmware, then any other homebrew apps you may need after that. I'm only in these forums occasionally, so hopefully someone may have already written some guide better suited for what you need.
