Hacking please help a noob with an r4i3ds card

hi guys im hoping someone can help me out,i got my son a 3ds for christmas,a guy gave me a r4card it has www.r4i3ds.com on the cart,

anyway i tried the r4 at first it was fine i bought my son few games with his 3ds and it had to update to play,its updated to 4.5.0 now,but the r4i wont work it says error occured when i try to use it,

is there a way to fix this or is it buggered?, ive tried the latest firmware from the site but still the same error, the cart shows a dark labrinth icon when inserted if that matters,

any help would be greatly appreciated,thanks in advance

Are you using the DS-mode flashcard or the 3DS mode card? If it's the 3DS card you're trying to use, make sure that you are upgraded to the newest Flashcard launcher, and that it's a supported game (Pokemon X/Y and Animal Crossing do not work).
