Let's imagine hypthetically I got a .3ds file of a 3DS game through totally legitimate and legal means. Now let's imagine I want to play that on my system. How would I go about doing so? Do I need a flashcart?

Yes, you need a flashcart to play .3ds files on the 3DS. You may however convert that .3ds file into a .cia, which can be installed and played directly on your 3DS.

Using godmode9 is the simplest way to convert a .3ds file:
Why not just do it the easy way and copy the 3ds file to your 3ds sd card insert it into the 3ds. Start the 3ds and hold start. Select godmode9 the select sd card select the 3ds file and select convert to cia. Much easier this way.

Oops I missed out a step. Step 4.is the one.

1.copy the 3ds to sd card
2. Start 3ds then godmode9
3. select the 3ds file.
4. Select ncsd image options
5. Select build cia from 3ds file.

No you don't need a Sky3DS+ to convert 3ds to Cia. You just need godmode9 as I stated above. It even tells you this in the 3ds hacks guide. https://3ds.hacks.guide

Technically, you need a flashcard to play .3ds files, but you can convert them to .cia files and use those instead, without a flashcard.

First off, don't necro threads for no reason. Second, GM9 can convert things just fine and there's also other ways to do it on your PC without moving it to the SD card. Third, .3DS files are uncompressed so they take up massively large amounts of space on the SD card (some even twice as much as they actually are) due to cartridge padding. Fourth, flashcards are never worth it nowadays, they are a complete waste of money that only drain battery life while offering nothing in return.

Finally, can someone for the love of god lock old answered threads like this already? Tired of seeing more and more necros every day in the recent content tab!
