I haven't even seen this tool fly by here.
If you used search you could have known, so if nobody even posted anything about it, I tend to say, good luck finding anyone to help out here...

What does it need an internet connection for? Is it actually connecting to somewhere out there or does it just need the connection of the network? I deleted it when it pulled that surprise.

I found my answer and will give it another go. There was a release just a couple hours ago too it seems. I have been using Alembic a bit but not any PS4 yet. Have done some PS5 titles using LZ4 Compressor as well.

I tried one build and for whatever reason it "needs" internet and locks up otherwise. I noticed there is a new build from an hour ago and will give it one last try. Otherwise, I keep a hard nope to the internet and can't see a legit reason for it.

I am not having much luck though with my PS4 dumps so was kind of hoping it might have been an easy option. Feels more scammy and like by next week it will have ads all over the app or something.

Ok here we go

...to start...why was it saying I need internet for anything? Red flag to me right there.

And....some strange names for payloads that don't even need a PC but they do need internet still. Strange too....

And THEN........WTF? I didn't take that screenshot. Hmmmmmm

Oh and what is this? Seems like your app here is REALLY REALLY needing that internet.

OHHHHHHHH! AND WOW!!!!! It is so your app can take captures of my screen and send it to you!

Now I am again, not an expert, but looking at the decrypted eboot from the application and the payload elfs, I think we have someone with some not so nice intentions toward this community.

Maybe I am just really out of touch with technology now though and sending screenshots for AI to do something with in real-time is a new normal. Could be now I guess. Who knows.

A second or third opinion would maybe be nice. I would not use any of that devs shit though.

Cheers!

Those are some disconcerting findings.

Telemetry itself is not a bad thing; most devs use it to collect real-world data on how their applications are used, since users are (in practice) terrible about accurately reporting how they use an application and what issues they run into. However in those cases, it is important that devs disclose what they are collecting and why.

Which, checking the website, that information does appear to be posted.

Data we process
  • Console install id — a random identifier generated on the console so backups and link sessions stay tied to that installation. It is not your PSN account name or email.
  • Save backups — archive files you choose to upload (game save data). They are stored in our vault under your install id and, if you link a provider, mirrored to that account.
  • Cloud link tokens — if you connect Google Drive or Dropbox, we store OAuth refresh tokens and a limited account hint (for example email or account id) so we can upload files on your behalf. Tokens are used only for that purpose.
  • Diagnostic telemetry (optional product feature) — crash and diagnostic lines the app may send, with install id and app version, to help us fix bugs. Live preview frames may be uploaded while that feature is enabled on a console you control.
  • Server logs — standard request metadata (time, status, approximate IP via reverse proxy) needed to operate and secure the service.

Meanwhile, despite the claims of being open source and being hosted on Github, the project appears to be closed source, as the source code isn't actually posted anywhere (that I can find). Github is just being used to host the download. Meanwhile the license indicates that it is fully proprietary.

I have not used this application in particular, so I have no specific insight beyond that. Though the required internet connection doesn't immediately seem to be for anything nefarious; the author either opted to block use of it offline, or it is otherwise a bug. If it's the latter, it needs fixed. If it's the former, that is kind of a crummy requirement to slap on the program.
