Although it's pretty obvious to all but the most blinkered Rare fans that the N64 game GoldenEye has about as much chance of hitting the Wii Virtual Console as Tiger Woods keeping his club to himself, there's always been a part of us that held out hope.

However, Microsoft's Ken Lobb (the Klobb!) has now all but confirmed that it will never happen by announcing that the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade version of its N64 shooter Perfect Dark will not only include the three multiplayer maps lifted directly from GoldenEye that made it into the original N64 release, but also all of the weapons that made the game so much fun to play (proximity mines, we're looking at you).

The maps confirmed so far are Complex, Felicity (GoldenEye's Facility) and Temple. The weapons themselves will be renamed to avoid any legal issues that might arise. The release date has now been confirmed as March 17th.

Essentially, this means that Xbox fans will be getting the two things that made GoldenEye so amazingly addictive - the brilliant 4 player multiplayer mode and the truly fantastic selection of guns, mines and rocket launchers.

Damn.

Damn, damn, damn, damn. Ahem.

Not exactly breaking news, but I'm a huge Perfect Dark fan and this XBLA version would actually be reason enough for me to buy a 360. This basically means that you can say goodbye to any hopes of a Goldeneye re-release. Still, since Perfect Dark and Goldeneye both played very similar, you'll still have pretty much identical Goldeneye fun on Perfect Dark.

Ah, well, we get the Perfect Dark xbla game then

But there's always hope on teh Wii64 emu to run GoldenEye N64 rom on the Wii.
On the otherhand, you still can go out and buy a N64 and the Goldeneye Game on the secondhand market.
Nothing beats playing the original on a real N64

Meh GoldenEye single player maps weren't that great anyway, multiplayer ones were a lot better.

They should bring back the feature that allowed you to put your face on your character in Perfect Dark like the originally planned.

Complex and Temple were our fave maps, just reading you mentioning those maps in your post Guild brought back loads of memories.

...

Weren't... those already in the original game...? Weapons...too?

Boooooorrrrriiiinnnggg. I guess it's hype for some people though. Now, what's this about the newly released Beta 4 of GoldeneyeSource being fucking awesome?

In March, an hi-def port of Perfect Dark will be released on Xbox LIVE Arcade. The port will feature much more than tarted up graphics.

Ken Lobb from Microsoft Game Studios has told Kotaku at DICE 2010 that players can use weapons from Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007. That game was developed by Rare, the same studio behind Perfect Dark, which has been called GoldenEye's "spiritual successor". GoldenEye 007-style weapons were also unlockable in Perfect Dark, but with slightly different names.

Lobb also confirmed to Kotaku that the upcoming Perfect Dark port will feature GoldenEye levels in the multiplayer.

Facility, Temple and Complex, the GoldenEye levels that were in the original Perfect Dark have made the jump to the XBLA version as well.
Do you know what this means?
Felicity, Temple and Complex aren't the only Goldeneye maps in PDXBLA.

The new game modes are awesome, but it's definitely already in need of a patch. License to Kill is completely broken, and in at least one map the Golden Gun spawns at a blocked-off upper level of the map, making Live and Let Die a complete crapshoot when that happens. It is still awesome, though, I've spent probably 12 hours playing since the release.

This information has just made this game a day 1 purchase for me. Thank you for this! I needed something to look forward to!
