Elbridge Colby, a man best known for being named after cheese, summoned Pope Leo's ambassador Cardinal Christophe to the pentagon for a threatening lecture.

“America has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world,” Colby and his associates informed the cardinal. “The Catholic Church had better take its side.”


As the room temperature grew, Hale said he confirmed that one U.S. official “reached for a fourteenth-century weapon and invoked the Avignon Papacy, the period when the French Crown used military force to bend the bishop of Rome to its will.”

Pope Leo has chosen not to capitulate to the cheeseman's threats.

“The Holy See has not, since that day, given an inch.”

You're sure that's not an april fools joke article? It's farfetched, but just the kind of "not absurd enough to be downright dismissed for this administration".


anyhow...having never heard of the Avignon Papacy, I turned to wikipedia. Quoted:

So...if that's correct, it's neither a "weapon" nor "invocation", but a straight up threat. It's just a way of saying "co-operate or we'll kill the pope and put our own pope in his place".

I think I voiced my opinion on the US version of the catholic church a few times (short version: it's a cult that uses the Jesus name brand, church buildings and perhaps some symbology but otherwise has nothing to do with Christianity...to the point where they call Jesus's teachings "woke"). I always thought those two religions would just...co-exist awkwardly together, just like pretty much all religions. But if this article somehow isn't a morbid april fool's joke, then they're sinking further in the "total nuts" category.

What an odd thing to do. To what end?

To have another mouthpiece to spew lies that a war is a good thing? They have enough of those, and they are failing miserably.

To spread lies that it's a good thing to follow the pedophile-rapist-in-chief? Only the worst of the worst still believe that. They aren't getting new people to join on that front.

It's just so....pointless...
