PAL, NTSC, and default?

I don't really understand the difference between these games.. (Like for example, using a Swap Magic)

What I understood from it was
PAL - Australia, stuff like that
Defualt - USA
NTSC - Japan

Correct?

I can tell you standard VHS tapes didn't have regional lockout "per se". But... The tape, player, and display still need to be the same video format for proper playback. So I could watch Japanese ones for instance, though not other places like Europe.
