I was just curious, as getting started up on a homebrew is an interest of mine. I want to possibly add an opening animation. If possible, does anyone know how I should start to make it?

2 main ways:
True video:
Here you get a bunch of pictures and play them really fast (12fps is bare minimum, 17 is better and 24 is "FILM" and the start of what most people like.

Game rendered: if you have a sprite you move it around the screen. Most guides teach you how to get the player to move the sprite, moving according to something already should be even easier:

You could also combine the two and animate a background while moving a sprite (not sure how well the DS would take to it mind as it would be a fair drain on resources).
