Hacking Old 3DS XL on 9.2U rxtools questions

I have an Old 3DS XL on 9.2U. I’m trying to install rxtools to play 3ds roms ideally in emunand mode (without running the cubic ninja each time or buying a gateway). I’ve got a few questions as I’m pretty new to this. I have a R4 flashcard and cubic ninja (I’d prefer to not use cubic ninja as I’m using this on my N3DSXL to use pastacfw).

My main question is if I need to downgrade to 4.2 in order to install emunand/rxtools? I’d like the hack to be semi-permanent unlike the cubic ninja hack because I only have one cubic ninja which I use for the N3DSXL.

Also do I need to install MSET? (I don’t really understand what that does). Is RXtools preferable to cakescfw also?
