Edit: yes you can! As long as you don't don't go backwards past the last time you closed the game.
So if you closed the game at 14th 18:53, no matter the real date you can continue if you set the Switch's time to 14th 18:56.
The rule of thumb is that time offsetting is possible as long as you don't cross the "last closed" date backwards, which would count as time travel.

I just want to play the game, but the stores are always closed when I'm free :(

Is there a way to go back to the last time I closed the game and continue from there? Like, I closed the game at 18:52, and I want to continue from 19:00 when it's actually 22:36. And once I'm done playing, I close the game, turn on internet time syncing, then I go to sleep.
But I want to do the time offsetting without any of the bad side effects. I don't want to cheat, I just want the stores to be open after I'm done with work.

My system is unhacked, so I can't even back up my save file for testing purposes. All I can do is keep track of last time I closed the game, and change time.

I remember that in ACNL you couldn't time travel at all because it detected when you changed your system date. Can ACNH also do that?
