Original model. Been sitting in my in-law's closet for at least a year so I know it's on an earlier OFW. But it won't boot to the Home Menu. Battery light is blue, and it was hard to tell in that light but I think the backlights are on.

Likely stock since my father-in-law is more of a hardware man than a software man. He likely wouldn't know where to find this place so I doubt it's hacked. It still has the original 2Gb SD card.

Anything I can do from here?

Well the battery certainly didn't work. While I was unable to get all the way in due to stripped screws on the opposite side, I was able to dislodge and reinsert the battery from what I could get open. Still doing it. Booting without SD card, still doing it. Will try Recovery Mode

UPDATE: Recovery mode is not happening with or without an SD card.

Use a strong magnet and sweep around the Y-X-B-A, (Start), and (Select) area*. Try to wake the 3DS if its sleep mode switch is stuck.

Just don't bring that magnet anywhere close to the upper section. This can attract and smash the magnet into the glass panel and deform the speakers.

So the ntrboothax method. Got it, will give it a shot. Hopefully that isn't a permanent issue. Now I just need to find a good enough magnet

Should I do this while it's on or off or does it matter? Because I'd like to do it while it's on so I can see results if that's not an issue

The magnet is to try waking the 3DS from sleep if the switch got stuck after being shelved away for so long. It's better to try sweeping the magnet while the 3DS is turned on so you can look for any display changes. Don't forget to try sweeping from the backside, too.

If that 3DS has never been hacked, you don't necessarily need a NTRboot flashcart. However, it doesn't hurt to try this if you suspect your father-in-law bricked his console in a fail System Update. If NTRboot doesn't revive the 3DS, the next suspicion would be hardware issue.

Without a backstory behind that handheld, hardware problems would take guesswork in troubleshooting.

I didn't try the backside. Alright, I gotta see if my flash cart is good enough for NTR Boot.

Sliding it on the front, especially around Start/Select just seems to turn the backlight off so far.

Found a spot on the side where sliding the magnet darkens the display, tried Start+Select+X+Power there, but all that happens after releasing the buttons is the system powers off

When you get a compatible DS flashcart, hack the 3DS with NTRboot and use CTRTransfer.

If that doesn't work, disassemble the 3DS and look for loose/broken flex cable(s) and unseated WiFi module. Harder to diagnosis is a bad camera, which would require a working part to check for.

The SD card had only the original 3ds files on it. No signs that there was ever a hack.
We know this already. The point is that if it WERE hacked, but all of the unofficial files were removed, this would cause your issue.

Why would you try it with the system both ON already, AND in sleep mode? That's not how NTRBoot works. Do you have a flash card inserted that, FOR SURE, has a working NTRBoot on it?

Yes, I configured it for NTR on my main 3DS.

UPDATE:

After testing on another 3DS so I could get the NTR process right, it's still not working. The magnet triggers sleep mode, so I've found the position (I can tell because the power light is fading in and out). But turning it off, keeping the magnet there, and using the button combo still does nothing. I find it likely that it is loading the exploit but I can't see it. Or it might not be. I can't really tell.

3DS power light and backlights turn on, nothing beyond that happens

EDIT: Actually, I know it's not because the light shortly goes back to the sleep-mode state.
