Hacking Noob question re backups

Hi All

Being new to this, having only owned a Wii (PAL) for 2 weeks, am I right in assuming that if I download a PAL game from somewhere.... and burn it to disk.

I then need to have a backup launcher installed on my Wii to be able to play the game?

yes either a modchip or the backup loader or softmii.

please use the sticky on top of the forms or so a search on how to install whichever 1 you choose there are many guides on this form.

*(which as far as im aware is simply a collection of tools made by other people isnt it?)

course, softmii is a guide, so when following that he is able to. your reffering to the softmii tweaks app.

Softmii is (almost) just a guide. And a badly written one.
Just follow the one in my sig, the "official" one from gbatemp. It's better.

isn't a part on the softmii guide also about downgrading? cos i used that "guide" to downgrade all wii's i know it's cos of the programs suppyed with it that eventually it'll downgrade, but it is in the guide right?

Yea, but the main point of Softmii is to enable full region-free backup loading from disc channel.

Personally, I don't see Softmii as an awful guide. It's really detailed and to-the-point. It's even better if you got my version of the guide.

Yes, it has a downgrade part, but, it is needed for the objective of the pack.
