Hacking [Noob Question] Is it nesscessary to format everything before downgrade?

I have done some research about downgrading my O3DS and some poeple say that I should format my system and then format the SD card before downgrading my O3DS. The thing is I have like 5 digital games on my system and I really want to keep them. So the question is "Is it nesscessary to format everything before downgrade?"

P/s: Any free space on the SD card needed for downgrade or it just need enough space for all the files I need to copy?

Don't format anything!

Make a backup of your SD files and folders to PC, then downgrade
