Sony has told Kotaku that there will not be a North American version of the UMD Passport program, which would allow PlayStation Vita users to transfer their PSP discs to the upcoming handheld.
Sony debuted the UMD Passport program in Japan last December alongside the release of the Vita. Japanese gamers can insert their game discs into their PSPs, register them on their PlayStation Network accounts, and pay a small fee to re-download their games on the Vita.
Unless Sony changes its mind or announces some sort of alternative option, North American PSP owners will have no way to play their UMDs on the Vita, though they will be able to access any PSP games they purchased digitally.
I've asked Sony why it won't bring the UMD Passport program to North American customers and will update with any further news or explanation.
Sony will release the PlayStation Vita in the U.S. on February 22. Look out for Kotaku's review in the coming weeks.

You have PSP UMD's ---> You probably have a PSP = Keep your PSP.

Problem solved. Besides, I don't see how people would magically start trading in their PSP, especially Tempers. Let's face it, we all have CFW here.

I'm pretty sure that anyone with a Vita and UMDs would rather have them all on one device rather than having to switch between two separate ones.

In all seriousness, I owned a PSP for years, but never bought a single UMD. If the PSVita get's hacked I'm buying one for sure.

Considering I have never bought a PSP game, I really don't care. I'll probably get like Peace Walker and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite if I wanted PSP games on my Vita.

good news.
I didn't want to clutter my PS Vita memory card with PSP games since I already have a PSP for PSP games.

so no biggie.

Completely unsurprising news. Nothing to see here.....at least the PSN isn't console specific

I don't think you picked up on what he was putting down.
I realize that he meant he pirated all of his content. I just felt like mentioning my point, plus the fact that he's naughty for doing so.
I bought my PSP mainly to emulate though, the only time I used UMD's was when I borrowed from my friend though

Can I reserve my right to poke you in the eye with its success when the time comes? (Although it'll probably sell less then the 3DS).

By the way, I thought people buy Vita's to play Vita games, hmm?

There's this hip new thing in the English language called "periods". My brain was out of breath after reading that sentence in my head.

Also, systems with shitty last gen compatibility that have NOT failed (well, not flopped at least):
  • DSi: No GBA compatibility (technically it's still in the DS family, it's not a next-gen console)
  • N64: None at all
  • Gamecube: None at all
  • Xbox 360: Some key games didn't work on the system, issues with others.
  • PS3 Slim: None at all
PS VITA IS DOOMED RUN FOR YOUR GAMING LIVES.

Hmm, I wonder why...

Maybe because the PSP was Sony's first handheld, plus, Vita IS PSP-Compatible, it just doesn't support transferring titles. Y'know, just like the DS doesn't support Gameboy titles although it basically had a GBA in it? Or how the DSi cut all ties with the Advance for no reason whatsoever?

You so funny.
