Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

My demands....

* analog triggers
* motion for the two Joy Cons
* USB 3.0 for the eventual HDD

In all honesty the dock and the tablet should have been two consoles working together with both having a hot swappable cartridge slot allowing one user to continue their game on the go with another housemate being able to start a new game with just the dock. Making the dock a dummy to me is silly. Hell, at least give it cloud gaming capabilities.

Was just trying to add some good news, guess I didn't accomplish that, my bad:unsure::O

No, I do think it's good news. I think a less partisan video games industry is a good thing, if each company found a niche where they excelled there would be more variety and quality for the end user. Let's be honest, as far as 3rd party goes, there's little to distinguish XB1 and PS4 (fanboy flame fest citing framerates and g-whiz-flops incoming), I only chose XB1 for Halo, and it's console exclusives that frequently provide the best experiences. If all three platforms were significantly different, there'd likely be a lot more great platform specific games.

Well, sorry it wasn't to your liking, my apologies :(

Yeah, because that definitely would not have cost an ass-load.

I have a suspicion that each joy-con controller is gonna have motion control built into them, think of the possibilities of games utilizing what are similar to 2 wiimotes at the same time, even if its just warioware 2 player games, it seems like a very Nintendo thing to do. It would also allow for the more precise kind of aiming that the Wii U offers for Splatoon for those that use the motion control. I think we have reason to believe motion will be there.

Having a Accelerometer, Gyroscope on each side could be a good idea for motion controls!

I agree cost would have went up but it would be worth it. Come back to me after the stories of little jimmy hogging the Switch when his family members wanted to play starts coming in. The console should have been dock focused first with as many tablets as needed by a family being add ons for the dock. Might cost more but would be less of a headache.

I think that so many of you are hung up on how cool you think portability is that you forget the fact that this IS a home game console made to service a household of multiple people. Portability be damned when multiple people want to play and of have save files and profiles on the damn thing.

Yes, like any other home console, there's only one of it. Why is Jimmy hogging the Switch any different from hogging the PS4 or Xbone? I mean, aside from the fact that when Jimmy's hogging the Switch, he can still be moved off of the TV.

Lemme continue with saying this. Had Nintendo made the dock the main system, things could have gone this way...

* one last Wii U update to allow initial setup and access to settings menu to NOT require gamepad

*Switch released with dock AND tablet being play units, cartridge slot on both, games can be hot swapped between devices for portable play

* with dock still at home, a second player can play using their Wii U gamepad as the gamepad is no longer needed with the Wii U for basic Wii U functions.

*everybody wins

Yeah cause everyone will be using a high power pc then. Not fully sarcastic.

Surprise. I thought you were always about low price. They could always add an expansion dock later. They need to keep the price down. I mean, at that point, you are better off just buying one for each player. Making the dock playable too and not even just for some power boost, isn't going be cheap.

I do hope they add streaming tho, for dual screen play.

I think there is an extra flash chip to store user data on the console, as hinted by a Ubisoft representative, and the tablet can carry them over.

Maybe the bundle is $400 but the handheld is only $200. Also a 4 teraflop dock made by Nvidia.

Kinda expected Nintendo to pull another gimmick with this console despite it not really succeeding.
