Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

Honestly, am I the only person here who doesn't care if it's 4K or not? I've been a Nintendo fan all my life so I'm used to sub-par graphics compared to Sony and MS, but I just don't see the point of ultra-super-high quality graphics. I can barely even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, let alone 4k and above. I do see why it could be an issue though, since what I just said doesn't apply to a lot of people, especially the MS/Sony/PC crowd...

4K gaming is not coming to this, lets be real. Frankly I don't care though. If I want 4K gaming, I'm gonna get a nice gaming PC, not a console (or console/handheld hybrid for that matter).
4k 2d platformer and 4k video. I am not to assume a mere 4tf(or lower) can handle 4k at full force.

I know the rumour but on first look the dock seems a bit small. Just checked and px2 can be configured to merely 10w with a single chip, which is still sufficient for mobile. The real question is if it is possible to squeeze a mxm/ soc, a psu and cooling in that thing.
First of all, forget the PX2 - it's an automotive card made specifically to interface with cars, this configuration is nothing like it. As for size, of course it'll fit - MXM boards are tiny, and this won't use MXM, it'll be integrated hardware. If you're worried about the PSU, look at the Pico PSU. There's definitely enough space in that dock - whether there are some goodies in there remains to be seen.

Ah yes, there are rumors that it can handle 4K video, which I believe is probably true, sorry I thought you were talking gaming.

4k makes my eyes burn due to the pixel density, so I really don't care if the Switch has 4k.

Unless the stand removes the tablet casing, or the tablet has a weird vent on the back, that's not going to happen since you can't just use activate cooling on a plastic surface and expect better thermal temps. Even if it is some completely customized architecture it's not going to hit the raw power the GPU in the PS4/Xbone, that's a fact. Unless Nvidia is pushing a customized Xavier chip (which isn't likely at all), it's not going to hit the same graphical fidelity as an Xbone/PS4.
In a majority of games, the first-revision XB1 and PS4 only push 30 FPS at 1080p. The Shield TV supports a pretty wide selection of modern games at 60 FPS, a whole lot more at 30 FPS, and it's not even using a Tegra X2. 1080p@60 is easily doable for modern hardware, even mobile. Shit, Nvidia just revealed the GTX 1050 which will do that, and for a little over $100.

Nobody's saying Switch is going to match Scorpio or the PS4 Pro, but nor does it need to.

The dock would be much thinner if it didn't feature any hardware as it'd amount to a charger and HDMI extension - unless it's purely aesthetic, there's "something" in there.
Could be. But I don't find it that thick.

Maybe it's made that way to support the weight of the tablet, so the entire thing doesn't fall forward.

Most people aren't going to care about 4K console gaming, hell most people don't even have a 4K TV yet. I'm with ya, I truly do not care at all if this system (or the competitions' consoles for that matter) have 4K gaming or not.

Cool that they got Skyrim running on it at all, but I have my doubts that it'll take off. Cart based games limit storage space, and the Tegra processor isn't as capable as the x86 architecture the PS4/XBone are using. Games won't be as easy to port, and you'd have to cut down textures both for storage and power reasons. Expect Western devs to drop it like a brick after the first eight months, although I don't doubt Japan will go nuts over it. I'm gonna guess the first year will see ports (or announcements of ports) of Persona 5, Disgaea 5, pretty much all the Danganronpa games if they have Spike Chunsoft on board.

Also the lack of hard drive support, outside probably external drives when it's docked, is going to be frustrating as hell. Streaming HD textures from an SD card or similarly-fast cart is not gonna end well.
How are carts limited? If you mean info stored on them then your wrong. You can get add cards you too 1Tb.

Let's just wait until Sony copies this idea with the PlayStation Matrix.

Yeah, Sony could probably improve and learn from it with all the fancy bells and whistles... streaming not only at 4k but 8k. haha.

@Autz
I hope it'll be an old-school Metroid which is long overdue or Metroid Prime like game would do. I'd be satisfy. I just hunger for more Metroid games since they skipped this generation. I won't be surprised if they're going to do an HD remake of Metroid Prime though as it's an instant easy money, milking the franchise.

I hope Sun/Moon gets a port to NX, I'd be super hyped to play a mainline Pokemon game on a TV and the NX seems like the perfect opportunity since it's handheld too.

I would hope that if any 3DS games do get ported that they'd actually improve the graphics and not do just a straight up port. As fun as Sun and Moon are gonna be, I have to imagine if you played it as it looks now it wouldn't look so great on your big TV at home.

The dock is thick for balancing reasons. It is just plastic. It doesn't have to contain anything special, and knowing Nintendo, it won't. Stop those conspiracy theories. Also, stop hoping for it to be at the PS4 level. Won't happen. Nope. Zero chance.
