Nintendo Switch firmware 5.0.0 released

kKSBku0N.png

After being hinted at by the iOS version notes for Nintendo's parental control app, the Nintendo Switch has received the firmware update for version 5.0.0. The last update to the Nintendo Switch, and previous current firmware, was version 4.1.0 which released in December of last year. The new update to 5.0.0 adds new avatars from Kirby and ARMS, changes to parental controls, and as always, everyone's favorite; system stability improvements. While this is a major update in terms of version number, it appears that the changes here are relatively minor in scope. You can see the full changelog in the quote below.

Added the following system functionality
Facebook and Twitter friends that also use Nintendo Switch can now be added through Friend Suggestions
Friend suggestions are based on the Facebook and Twitter accounts you have linked to your Nintendo Account
To view your friend suggestions, from the top left of the HOME Menu head to your User Page > Friend Suggestions
You must be 13 or older to use this feature
Select from 24 new ARMS and the Kirby series icons for your user
To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top left of the Home Menu > Profile
Digital software purchases made from a PC or smart device will start downloading sooner than previously, even if the Nintendo Switch console is in Sleep Mode
Filter News to view only unread news or news from specific channels
To keep the Parental Controls PIN private, the default method for PIN entry has been changed to entering using the Control Stick and buttons instead of the on-screen number pad
When prompted to enter you Parental Controls PIN, press and hold the + Button to change between input methods
Captured videos in the Album will be restricted by Parental Controls depending on the Restricted Software setting and Software Rating Organization
Using the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, add specific software titles to your whitelist to exclude them from the console’s Parental Controls Restricted Software setting
Play-Time Limit restrictions will still apply even when the software title has been whitelisted.
Receive notification when pre-purchased software is ready to play
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller grip colors will now display in the Controllers menu
General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:
Resolved an issue that caused Play Activity to display incorrectly in the Profile section of your User Page

As always, if you have any interest at all in homebrew, be sure to stay at the lowest possible firmware you can.

I tried it and I can access the eshop but you cant download anything until you update :P

What error message do you get when trying to download something? If you can get into the eShop itself, you should be able to download whatever is there. The version check is when you are first loading it.

I'm willing to bet that Nintendo's going to disable eShop access on 4.1 during the next scheduled maintenance period.

Oh for sure, this grace period won't last very long, but hopefully long enough for Kirby to unlock digitally! (Speaking of which, is there anyone with a cart version of Kirby on 4.1 FW that would be willing to try downloading the most recent update (above 1.1.0 because that what's I have pre-loaded but update shows a newer version available) while the eShop is still open to see if the version above 1.1.0 requires firmware 5.0 or not?

If history is any tell, these grace periods for Switch seem to have lasted about 1.5 weeks (2.3.0 -> 3.0 lasted about 10-12 days).

Probably, debating on if I want to hold out. Zzzz

Best to get anything you absolutely want from the eShop now and decide after you are locked out. You can always update if you change your mind later, but if you miss out on downloading/updating anything now, you'll be out of luck if you decide to wait (at the very least download demos to hold you over if you decide to wait on 4.1 for CFW).

The only thing I don't have is Kirby. May pick that up tomorrow if finances allow.

It says "Unable to download some data as the system version is out of date. Please update your system." I'm trying to download the japanese voice packs for xeno 2

Weird, maybe separate things like DLC/addons are handled differently in the version checking. Good to know. Thanks for the info!

(For what it's worth I'm still able to download game updates from the Home screen at least.)

There has been reports of people with switch on 5.0.0, that third party accessories doesn't work properly and people with Nyko dock bricking their switch.

I bought celeste and I can confirm that purchased games won't begin downloading either if you aren't on the latest firmware

no I'm not using any DNS right now

Very very odd, I was able to download stuff from the eShop just recently (demos and redownloading previous purchases). Are you able to start the download if you go into your Download list in the eShop and manually start downloading Celeste there? I would double check your network settings, but failing being able to get it to download, you should be able to talk with Nintendo support and might be able to get a one-time refund citing you don't have a proper wifi connection for your Switch right now or something like that. Sorry for your troubles and good luck either way!

Also to confirm, I was just able to unlock Kirby Star Allies after midnight ET, so yay! However, the update that was available (beyond 1.1.0 that is currently installed) now states a system update is required to download. Bummer if that update would have worked on 4.1 but I count myself lucky that I was still able to get digital Kirby on this firmware. I am now ready to settle in for the long dark CFW wait...grace period was good while it lasted!
