I am just getting into this as a new project. Considering attempting to install a 2tb sata drive into the ps2. My question is in regards to the ps2 network adapter. I see every guide saying you need either the network adapter or I see a lot of people use the gamestar sata adapter. What exactly is the adapter for? Is it possible to run the harddrive without using the sata adapter? Curious if I am running off a sata adapter, do I always need this network adapter attached to the ps2?

My plan was to transfer any game by hooking the drive up to the pc, so using a regular network adapter would not be needed in this case. However if I am using a sata drive, do I always need the adapter plugged in?

You connect your hdd to the network adapter, and then you connect it to the ps2. So yes you need to have the adapter connected to the ps2 in order to play games. It doesn't have to be connected to a network though.
