The current Wii console is to be phased out in Europe, Nintendo has told Eurogamer. It will be replaced by the just-announced new Wii design.

The company has announced it will launch the new model in time for Christmas. It comes with Wii Sports and Wii Party packed-in.

Notably, the new Wii lacks backwards compatibilty. Also, support for GameCube games and controllers has been axed in favour of a new, smaller unit.

Oh boy. Sucks for any new wii owner after christmas.

EDIT: Forgot Source. Eurogamer

Wait what? Just ditch the GC BC? Somehow I smell Gamecube VC to be up and running in no time. Or even better, they just make new (or possibly old) Wii owners buy all the games again if they want to play them with the Wii. Well now people know to buy it cheap when they are on sale (mine cost 99€

Oh. Sorry. I even checked the wii section to make sure this hadn't been posted yet.

I hope nintendo cut wii's price at least.

Backwards will be missed by the hardcore players. But I don't think casuals care about it, assuming they know it exists, of course.
