i have used 3 different drives now with 100% sucess
1. seagate freeagent 500 gb and 1tb
2. Western Digital Element 1TB
3. Ultra Speed 600 gb.

I got a 500GB Western Digital MyPassport Elite for Christmas, works great! I actually have it partitioned so 100GB is WBFS formatted for my Wii games, and the remaining 400GB is for normal backup purposes

$100 us will get you a western digital my book essential edition 1tb drive. It works great with the wii. I've got the entire thing formatted to wbfs, but should work fine with multiple partitions too.

Amazon has great deals for drives... always go WD. I have a seagate on my WII and it's been doing well for almost a year now.

i was using that to show him the hard drive its not much more expensive if you walk in local store and buy it. i know the 500GB WD is about 110$ AUD so the 250GB should be about 70$ AUD =p
