I'm back in the flashcart scene after 8 months of not having a DS. I'm getting one again soon.

I just want to ask you tempers on the things that I need to download (aside from ROMs) to make me have a "complete package" when I first boot my long-awaited AK2i. Like firmware, any important homebrew (ex. backtothedsmenu.nds which takes you back to the DS menu but I guess I won't be needing that anymore) and anything else.

you'll want the newest loaders.

download them here:
http://akaio.gbatemp.net/loaders/

and replace the _aio/loaders folder with the new loader.

this will increase rom compatibility

Well there's always the de-facto Moonshell and DSOrganize of course. Otherwise, I'd suggest a web browser of sorts (Bunjalloo springs to mind) and a decent image viewer (Comic Book DS for instance, though it does require pre-converting).

I notice no one has actually linked you to a firmware.

You'll want AKAIO 1.4.1 Repack here. (your main firmware).

And the loaders mentioned above should most definitely be downloaded. They'll contain fixes for recent games (i.e. the KH 358/2 game).
