Hacking NDS games on latest firmware

I haven't owned a flashcard since my original DS, so I'm a bit out of the loop.
I have a New 3DSXL on the latest firmware (11.6.0-39E) and I want a flashcard that can run NDS roms (not 3DS) and NDS homebrew (such as GBC and NES emulators).
Being able to play GBA games would be nice too, but not essential.

Is this possible with just any flashcard? Which one would be best?

Basically any flashcart will work, even the R4 and DSTT were rigged to work through some kind of magic or something.
Personally I suggest the R4i Gold. You get the benefits of Wood R4 and NTRBoot support for hacking any 3DS.

Perfect! Does that just work the same as an original DS flashcard, or is there any extra stuff I need to do? (the ones I used, I just needed to drop the files into the root folder of the card)

It does, you just drag and drop the firmware kernel.
