You only need the Gateway Launcher.

Go to Gateways home page download 3.6.2 put the launcher.dat onto the root of your SD card then put the GW folder into the 3ds folder where all your homebrew is and launch it then select Backup sysnand in the menu.

put launcher.dat in sd card, go to http://go.gateway-3ds.com or start gw.3dsx via hoembrew launcher, in gateway launcher menu , press backup.
    I thought this is intuitive

    got.gateway-3ds does not work on a N3DS.

use http://yls8.mtheall.com/3dsbrowserhax_auto.php to start you homebrewlauncher on sdcard root (/boot.3dsx) (works on <=10.3 o3ds/n3ds)

Keep the copy in a place not on your sd card, in case you didn't. Some people leave the backup on their sd card
