I was told that each NAND backup is unique to that particular Wii. Just a few questions in mind

1) Does Bootmii restore the key.bin together with nand.bin?
2) If yes, assuming that the boot1 of nand.bin is in same checksum as the receiver Wii, why it won't work?
3) if no, will it work theoretically if Bootmii is able to restore the key.bin?

Thanks guru.

the problem is what the key is used to encrypt the contents of console and is used and stored on the hardware.

that's why you need to convert a donor NAND image for another console, the process is decrypt the source image, and encrypt with the keys of the target console.

another thing different between consoles is the "bad sector" of the NAND, each NAND chip have damaged sector even with a excellent factory, so on the NAND is stored what sectors do not use and you must to move data from source image to good sectors on the target chip.

Thanks for the details. I believe the key is stored and can be modified from SEEPROM? Apart from the bad block management of NAND, and wrong version of boot1 and boot2, I am researching if it is possible to flash a donor wii nand and key to a receiver wii. If the key is hard-coded in OTP memory/other hardware, then it is impossible.

Btw, after studying punetwiin and betwiin, they claim that wii shop account cannot be transferred. Maybe the account is linked to the hardware serial number or so?

Don't get me wrong, I don't have any wiis require NAND transfer currently.

The keys are stored in OTP and cannot be changed. All that happens is that the source NAND is decrypted with the source console's keys, then re-encrypted with the destination console's keys. The destination's console's keys are not changed during this process.

Thanks for the information. Nintendo is really doing a "great" job in use of encryption and checksuming for system hardening.

It was easy to bypass some of the restrictions, as one of the admins left a registry key in the administrative shares drive, which allowed me to get around the blocking of some sites.
