Edit) Nevermind, I restarted my computer and now it works just fine.

Signing into Windows Live Messenger (what MSN became) has two main steps. The first is logging in, which is pretty much just a handshake. After that, it has to synchronise your contact list to tell you who is online (or it'll assume they're all offline). I won't pretend to understand why they use such a convoluted method.
From the sound of things, you're having problems with the second half. WLM has a built in tool for analysing the connection between you and their servers, which could help track down exactly where the problem lays (e.g. Closed ports, overactive antivirus, IM worms, etc).
Edit: seems the above has become redundant.
Well I got past everything but as soon as it went to the step after authorization, the connection would drop and it'd have to start all over again.
But it's fixed now. The PC problem, anyway... Don't know about Beup, since my DS is charging right now.
