Is there a reason why no homebrew program can play Avi's or other commonly used video formats?

Tunavids can play xvid at about 12 fps.

The main culprit in having special formats for the DS is the slow processor and limited ram. DPG is essentially just mpg.

Yes, there is. The DS's main processor is 66 MHz. That's the reason. I believe it was chuckstudios who once tried a generic MPEG player but it never got above 5 FPS. There's an MP4 player out there, but it doesn't run at full speed and has no sound. Tuna-viDS plays back AVI files at 12-15 fps, but you have to convert to the right dimensions and audio/video codecs in order for it to run. DPG, as was said before, is a modified version of MPEG created specially for the DS to maximize performance.

There simply isn't enough processing power to playback any old video file you happen to have lying on your hard drive. Thus, you have to convert to something that the video players can playback at the fastest speed.

If you seriously want good media playback (let's be honest, dpg is decent at best unless you run multipass) look into spending like $50 and get a well reviewed chinese mp4 player. tinydeal.com has some really good ones (some crap ones too, so do your research!)

Chinese mp4 players, commonly, does not support AVI, and other movie files with codecs. I only know 2 portable devices that soon able to use run codec, are the pandora and iphone/ipod touch.

Uh, the one I've got right here I got for $60 on tinydeal and it runs avi's fine (xvid and divx). It's a bit slow when resizing vids that aren't in the native res though.

Err, xvid and divx are codecs. It also supports wmv, mov, swf, and flvs. Not sure how the swf playback is, the flv playback isn't great, but none of the flv content I have is in great quality, so it could be chalked up to that.
