I'd like to kind of compile a list of "monster hunting" games.

The ones I know of:

Monster Hunter
God Eater
Lord of Arcana
The Akuma Hunters - Exocister
Dynasty Warriors - Strikeforce

I remember something, that was similar, quite a short game in terms of gameplay though.
You were one of 3 players who were revived with black magic and given the ability to summon zombies to fight enemy armies. Had fun bosses, and the zombie commands were hilarious.

FOUND IT! Link to front of box It's Undead Knights.

I agree with God Eater though I don't hate Lord of Arcana, but it's still not my type of game.

Try if you can read japanese : Fairy Tail Portable guild 1 or 2 and OneChanbara Special
Its good (IMO)

also White Knight : Dogma Wars [it's worst IMO] but still a monster hunter like game.

Onechanbara, 3rd Birthday, and Undead Knights are not "monster hunter" games.

Just regular old 3rd person action games.

Probably God Eater Burst is the big one. Sticks very much to the Monster Hunter formula but I personally think it controls a bit better and it has some interesting mechanics to make it more than just a clone.

I guess you could call Phantasy Star Portable a Monster Hunter type game. I usually consider most loot-based third person action games to be Monster Hunter-esque. That's always been my view.

So how does Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce count then?

You fight some really big shit? dunno. Didn't like it personally.

Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter IMO.

God Eater is alright, but lacks the precision and humorous refinement that is Monster Hunter.

Well I've never played it but I thought Strikeforce was the same kind of game.
Go out with some friends and fight a giant monster being the point of each mission.

and that is it, the simmilarity ends there, the thing that will kill you will be most of them time be Human sized, you also don't collect loot per se

Third Birthday boss is all huge too

Reviews says they're basically the same. I never played the dynasty warriors series though.

If it's anything like past Dynasty Warriors games then it'll just be about hacking your way through a bagillion bad guys. Not really like Monster Hunter although some screenies of Strikeforce show big monsters and stuff. I don't know if they spew loot or anything though.

But Monster Hunter is mainly about loot above all else. You can spend just as much time picking flowers and mining materials as you can killing monsters. The game's are just giant OCD lootfests that feature you running around collecting tons and tons of materials for building armor and weapons or just getting more money. It's kind awesome like that.

and Dynasty Warriors combat is floaty as shit whilst Monster Hunter expects you to put more thought into your button mashing.

Totally agree with Gods Eater. Gods Eater is a wonderful game, more action oriented versus Monster Hunter's strategic fighting. You can rez your teammates when they run out of HP, and you have 30 seconds before they die - the game has the same limitation on deaths, but it's much more forgiving. You can also jump. And later, double jump. It's Devil May Monster Hunter.

MHP3rd is a better game overall, but Gods Eater is almost as good and fun for a more varied reason. It's also quicker to pick up than Monster Hunter - 30 minute quests that take 2-15 minutes versus 50 minute quests that take 20-50.
