I need something that I can play GC roms on.

Which is the best thing and what do I need and how do I use it?

I know it's a little out-dated, so I came at the right time! They are cheap now... xD

You don't really have much choice these days. It's down to either a viper gc extreme or xeno gc. Viper is a more fancy chip , has menu , file browser , ability to back up games , xeno gc is just a standard chip. Boots games and that's about it. Both are good , so it really depends on what you want from the chip. Both are direct boot , so just put game in and away it goes.

There are reports that playing backup disks on the gamecube is difficult with a modchip. But that playing backup disks on the wii with a modchip is easy. It seems the gamecube dvd drive is hard to adjust to reliably read writable dvd disks. And that the wii dvd drive doesn't be have to be adjusted at all.

You only really have four chip options: viper gc & qoob - both are excellent chips which use their own custom bios. Then there's duo gc & xeno gc both of which are drive mod chips - which just bypass the dvd drive security. The duo and xeno are very cheap and easy to install but have less features. You biggest problem will be from the size of the case, you'll need a case mod to use full size media, and these can be hard to find nowadays......as i'm currently tring to find a reliable source.

Im going to just use mini dvds, but Im not really sure I'd use the added features of the Viper GC or Qoob. Im pretty sure all I want to do is play the games and thats it.

I used a Qoob Pro, which did an amazing job for my GC! Never had a single problem with it. Also I hear the Xeno GC is a great cheap solution, coming in at the tail end of the available mod chips on the GC. The Viper is probably the most established chip, but I've been happy with my Qoob Pro, working perfect.

Me too. I think I'll just take off the case and have it open when I play.

Did this ever change?
i got a gift GC and have been Seriously reading up on modding it...

It's even harder now to find them (not surprising). Here and here are the only places who say they have them in stock that I could find. It could just be that they are trying to get rid of them quickly since most people have moved onto the Wii and don't need a GC for games anymore but the prices seem very cheap -- a year ago they were at least twice that price for the cheapest full case. Also you should check out the reviews online of those places. I have dealt with neither of them so have no firsthand advice to offer.

I ordered an Icedcube from mrmodchips a few days ago, he seems legit.

Really??? Seems legit??

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/MrModchips

Not only does he have a rating of '0' but he launched multiple DOS attacks against RESELLERRATINGS.COM. If you read the ratings, he also has stolen user names and passwords from his customers and used them to change their negative ratings (which have apparently been changed back).

So... chuckstudios, did you ever receive anything? If not, you should leave him negative feedback at RR.
