Microsoft "Explains" Weird Domain Registrations

A Microsoft employee has come out in the open and specified the reason for the company registering two domains names Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com.

Frank X. Shaw confirmed that this was just a defensive move in order to ensure that no third party can wrongfully purchase the said domains and misuse them. It has nothing to do with a possible partnership between the two giants.

"re: sony/ms domain names: Sony = great MS partner. No scoop here, this was just a defensive domain hold. Let’s move on to weekend, kay?"

TL;DR On July 13th Microsoft registered sony-microsoft.com and microsoft-sonly.com (which appears to be a typo as they later registered microsoft-sony.com) and since then there has been wild speculation as to why they did it. This tweet supposedly "explains" why they have registered them.

But I don't believe it- why would they register it and not Sony, and would Sony just let them do that? I'm sure they're up to something, but it doesn't have to be gaming related. But it would make sense as then they could be sure that they would dominate the market, but who knows...

Its not unheard of to register domains defensively to make sure nobody abuses it.

But it could be something else, I guess we will find out for better or worse

A partnership of some kind is not to hard to believe. I think people are forgetting that Sony and MS make stuff other then gaming consoles. Its just hard to believe for it to be a defensive move when but companys have been around so long.

Domain name registrations don't mean shit, as evidenced by the Nintendo Beem, Flow, Current, or other names we thought the Wii U was going to have.

I didn't think that anyone had explicitly found that it was Nintendo that purchased those domains? At least here it is clearly registered by Microsoft themselves.

Also, the Nintendo Current, Beem, Flow etc could be names of services coming to the WiiU and don't have to be console names.

He/she thinks the domain name = partnership. Partnership cause by Sony getting hack and wanting better security. (Tho MS have been "touched")

If that their reason then unless they are lying there isn't a reason to not to be Sony-Nintendo.com or Microsoft-Nintendo.com.

Unless they dislike Nintendo that much.
