So, this is a feature on the switch
My switch is 4.1, my Mario Kart 8 is 1.4

You can do a thing to update the game and march local players but while doing the update it says "updating system"

Can anyone say for sure whether this feature updates the game/system, or just the game?

It can update your system in certain situations.
But if you already have an update installed, you can manually install the update by getting a dump of its nca and replacing it on your system using memloader. But keep in mind, the folder can be different on any system so you need to use a tool like hactool to compare the titled, and it's also important that the game update need to use a crypto key supported by your system version.

That's a lot I don't quite understand, but thank you!

Do you know whether it specifies that it is updating system or game, or is just "updating" as it does it?

See, I started the process and noticed it said "system updating" and cancelled it, but I wonder if it's doing the game, if it specifies as such, or is generic?

Mario Kart 8 got an update recently, so in order to update the game you need to update your console pretty basic stuff.
If you want to play online with the game that too requires a system update no way to around this unless you just play single player mode

no i dont want to play online, i want to play local but the other switches are online, so they have the most up to date mario kart.

looks like i found a video that confirms that it does specify that it is updating system, or software (it said system for me and i got suspicious and cancelled it)

so now i need to update the system without burning fuses and use local to update the game and voila!
