I've made my own SMB levels 5 years ago.
You can change the GFX, add/remove levels, add custom musics, from SMB1 to 3, you can change almost everything, for zero penny.
If you have a legit backup I see no reason why you would buy this tool.

It's for those of us who prefer to use a console, not a PC. Having "fingers on" editing with the Wii U GamePad should prove fruitful to the overall experience. :)

Face it most of the genreal public has no clue how to do that
 
Yes and that's why there is a need for Mario maker. Closest thing to rom hacking many kids know about is Minecraft mods

If the mario maker thingy is powerfull enough, that would be amazing :)
If any important stuff editable (graphic, music, asm) plus level editing is available in Mario Maker, that would be awesome!

Since wario ware diy had a music editor I would assume that Mario maker would as well
