So I have Mame 2003 and Mame 2000 installed, but what are the games to get? I know there are thousands of Mame roms out there, like street fighter 2 etc, and older ones like pacman and galaga. So I know some roms are too new to run etc, so how would I know what is compatible

I also noticed there are other arcade machines like a Sega one and a capcom one. So I can play them? And some games like contra say set 1 or set 2 ect so do I need all the sets? Or are they separate roms

Sigh, since you felt abandoned from that other thread.

You have no problem finding MAME roms, right? My go to place for retro stuff is that zone site.

I don't play MAME games myself, and what you're asking is really personal opinion and preference question.

This is like saying someone, "Hey, what book should I read?", at a library or bookstore that contains hundreds and if not thousands of books.

I had fond memories of playing the Simpsons arcade game with my cousins. We must have burned through $10 worth of quarters to beat the game.
$10 in the 90's was really not chump change either.* but Totally worth it. lol

If MAME emulator for the 3DS works with multiplayer, I wouldn't mind getting them to try again for memory lane's sake.

Well I found a bunch of roms, and it seems that set 1 or 2 etc are different roms but haven't tried yet. And found out there is a cps1 and cps2 emulator out there. And it seems you can play for roms in zip files. Will try later. I have never tried anything with Mame roms before but sounds fun. Definitely gonna check out the old.. Old vintage ones

Mame 2000 uses the Mame 0.37b5 romset, so pick ROMs from that set specifically to test with the 2000 core. Mame 2003 uses ROMs the 0.78 set, so make sure you use ROMs from that set for the 2003 core.

Broadly speaking, Mame 2000 runs faster than 2003 - some old (pre-1986) games run well even on O3DS. But 2003 has a larger romset and better accuracy. Yes, YMMV depending on the games you want to run. Many boards are simply too CPU intensive for 3DS to emulate at full speed - and other cores such as the four Final Burn Alpha variants (FBA, FBA CPS1 / CPS2 and FBA Neo Geo) may run certain titles better than the MAME options. Random titles may not run as compatibility - even if a given core is matched with the correctly formatted ROM - can be sketchy.

I think FBA might be better equipped to run the Sega / Nintendo home / arcade variants (like the Mega Tech and Playchoice).

ROMs can be merged into a single compressed file and some are split into a 'parent' and 'child' format where the smaller one looks for the larger 'base' ROM when the emulator launches it.

Well I tested some roms I got, and all were 0.184 and only xevious worked. The screen was on the side and the controls were all messed up lol almost not even worth it imo maybe I'll try the fba emulators and do cps1/2 roms
