I feel VLC would suffice as a decent media center solution. I use it on all of my devices because I don't really care for Kodi's commodities, and it can do just about anything Kodi can. I feel it's more intuitive and user friendly as well. I rent a VPS that I run as a seed box, and I can stream anything from it over HTTP with VLC. It also supports pretty much all known formats without issue.
