Before everyone starts to go state the obvious, yes I know that the RAM on this machine is soldered. That it would be very hard to replace and even harder to find someone who is properly qualified to do that kind of work, but lets say budget inst a issue, and you found someone that is willing to attempt to do it for you. What other challenges may arise? Is there a specific chip on the board that says how much ram the device should have. If so what is this chip? Where is it? How is it modified to work with say 32gb RAM. All signs point to it being possible if you or someone you know has enough experience, you can find RAM chips with a bigger density and order enough of them. The processors in the 15 Inch pros already support a maximum of 32gb of RAM. Yes i know this is very stupid and highly unlikely that it would work but im just curious if there is any other limitations that one could know about if one were to proceed with this daunting task.

You can buy you gotta go through hoop to get it to work a lot of tiny soldering work, too bad Apple doesn't like the idea of people messing around with their hardware anymore you have to pick when you BTO/CTO your order, older model you can just simply swap the ram. You gonna have a broken laptop if you don't know what you are doing.

most of my statement above was hypothical i was wondering if there is any chips on the board that tell the computer how much ram it has.

Usually for these chip you have to do research on the model and if it compatible, and find where you can source them typically Aliexpress. Based on this video, it shows that the concept work, you need to find the compatible chip and be super good with soldering, just note warranty is void if you mess around with internal component if you had warranty.

If there is someone, it would be Louis Rossman.
He has dedicated his life to fixing impossible-to-fix macbooks (and other apple products). Maybe if you asked him nicely enough (and some $$), he'll entertain you.

It probably (Apple isn't very well reputed for respecting common standards but Macs have been PCs using common Intel parts for over a decade) still uses SPD eeproms as in removable memory sticks... of course from the few pictures I found, there are no less than 2 flash chips all next to each other and/or memory configuration may be baked into a part of the one with firmware or configuration :D
