My girlfriend has a new 2ds xl that has the latest luma on it, and it has worked perfectly until now.

She was playing Rune Factory 4 (not off of a cart, if that makes a difference) and she pressed the home button to check the brightness, and the game froze, so she closed the ds and when she opened it, the splash screen showed and then went away (as if it was loading) but the black screen didn't go away. We turned it off, and tried turning it back on, and the same thing happened, but the wireless light also blinks.
The same thing also happens when I try to boot it without the sd card in (it usually will boot to the normal home menu when I boot it without the sd card in)
It does properly boot into godmode9 however

Okay... i just tred rebooting it from godmode9 and it hung on the black screen, and then I closed it a few times and opened it, and the home screen magically showed up, so now I am confused

My brother's n3DSxl also just did the same thing, but not from an in-game crash, just trying to turn it on... this is very confusing

His actually just showed an error

Here's a watered down outline of things you can try. Sorry, at this moment I haven't the heart to keyboard detailed instructions.
  1. Battery trick.
  2. Copy everything off your SD card and reformat in [FAT32 | 32 KB cluster size | MBR disk | Primary partition].
  3. Hardware test the empty card with H2testw, F3, or F3X.
  4. Use a temporary test setup as reference when debugging (CFW starter kit).
  5. Update to the latest [boot9strap v1.3 -or- fastboot3ds v1.2 stable], Luma3DS v9.1, and GodMode9 v1.8.0 (or 1.7.1).
  6. Repair the 3DS firmware with CTRTransfer(s), system updates, and/or sysnand *.bin image restoration.
  7. Install and play several small sized games: DSiWare [TWL_FIRM], GBA VC [AGB_FIRM], and 3DS [NATIVE_FIRM].
  8. Switch back to your main setup. Backup the saves + extdata with Checkpoint/JKSM.
  9. Online import the seed for games that need them using FBI.
